International Museum Day 

The International Council of Museums (ICOM) established International Museum Day in 1977 to increase public awareness of the role of museums in the development of society, and it has been steadily gaining momentum ever since. In 2016, International Museum Day garnered record-breaking participation with more than 35,000 museums hosting events in some 145 countries.

Museums as tools for creating peaceful communities

The worldwide community of museums celebrate International Museum Day on and around 18 May 2017 around the theme Museums and contested histories: Saying the unspeakable in museums.

This theme focuses on the role of museums that, by working to benefit society, become hubs for promoting peaceful relationships between people. The acceptance of a contested history is the first step in envisioning a shared future under the banner of reconciliation.

Saying the unspeakable in museums looks at how to understand the incomprehensible aspects of the contested histories inherent to the human race. It also encourages museums to play an active role in peacefully addressing traumatic histories through mediation and multiple points of view.

We invite cultural institutions of all types around the world to join in this celebration, which focus on the link allowing for a vision of the future above and beyond taboo subjects and towards a better understanding of one another.

Museum Day 2017 at Taras Shevchenko National Museum

This year's theme of the International Museum Day - "Museums and contradictory story, telling of concealment."

Therefore, Taras Shevchenko National Museum decided to show "Silenced" side of the museum - not its collection or exhibition, but secret rooms which reveal the secrets of museum work from the "inside".

This year, events will take place on Saturday 20 May:

12:00, 16:00 - Tour of the museum's secrets by the chief engineer of NMTSh.
14:30, 15:30 - Excursion "The pictures that come to life."
17:00 - 18:30 - CLesya Gorova concert.
18:30 - 22:00 - Quest "The internals of the museum" Chamber of Secrets NMTSh.
20:00 - 22:00 - Cinema under the stars.
